Nice informative article. There are many different and new types of technology in fractional resurfacing.who will be discussing fractional resurfacing and comparing to non-fractional resurfacing technologies. "With newer fractional technology we can achieve very remarkable results with minimal to moderate downtime.
The newest laser treatments are office-based procedures done on an out-patient basis, with a recovery time between three and five days. Costs can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars, and because they are usually considered cosmetic, these procedures are generally not covered by insurance.

"Fractional Resurfacing -- A Critical Assessment," a panel of investigators and consultants to the laser industry, will be moderated by Barry DiBernardo, MD (Apira Science, Cutera, Cynosure, Lumensis), and will include Jason Pozner, MD (Bioform, Sciton), E. Victor Ross, MD (Alma, Candela, Cutera, Lumensis), and Jeffrey Kenkel, MD (Palomar).

Fractional resurfacing is a cosmetic treatment that employs a laser to remove wrinkles, reduce acne scarring, alleviate dark pigmentation, and improve other conditions of the skin. Unlike earlier laser technologies, with fractional resurfacing only a tiny proportion of the skin receives the laser light.

Default Answer to What is fractional CO2 laser?

Back in the early 90's there was carbon dioxide resurfacing. Basically this laser vaporizes or ablates the epidermis down to the mid-dermis to help correct pigmentation, but more importantly to stimulate collagen and tighten the skin.

The results were terrific, but unfortunately, the risks were high. Risks such as hyperpigmetation, infection, scarring etc. occurred and patients had downtimes of 4-6 weeks!

Then in 2004, Dr. Dieter Manstein came up with a brilliant concept and that is fractional technology.

What this does is take the same carbon dioxide laser that has a long proven record for resurfacing and fractionated it, meaning the per pulse of the laser, tiny spots of skin were treated and beside the treated areas were intervening zones of untreated skin. Although the skin confluently looks treated, these small intervening, untouched areas allows for a much quicker healing time of around 4 days.

The other risks of infection were markedly reduced, although patients still need to be on an antiviral and if the settings are deep, then potentially an antibiotic.

The results are very nice and when you compare the risk/benefit profile, cosmetic surgeons like this better because we don't have to worry as much about our patients! Patients like it better because 4 days of downtime is easier to do than 4-6 weeks.

There are many companies that have these lasers. Like anything, some are better and higher powered with better results then others.

This was definitely an advance in laser technology.

Hope that helps.
