I just got botox in both of my masseter mucles, 20 units in each muscle to be exact, and I'm hoping it can get rid of the TMJ i've been experiancing for the past year. The thing is I read a few things online like, you shouldn't excercise for atleast 4 to 6 hours after. Or, don't massage the muscles because it can cause the botox to spread

The thing is everyday I have intense football practice, full contact, for 5 hours per day. So tomorrow I have to wake up after just getting botox, and get hit, run like crazy, get knocked on my ect. for a long time. Is this going to be bad after just getting botox. Is their going to be any complications from this such as having it spread to other muscles, or even worse being fatal?

I asked the guy who did it about it and he said excercising shouldn't be a problom, but I don't really trust doctors or dentists when it comes to things like Botox which hasn't really been studied well.

Hi fballer,

Botox has been studied lots! They've had it since the 80s. Which is 28-ish years worth. Having said that I can alwayrs remember my doctor saying not to exercise hard for 24 horus after the treatment

Is it because the extra exercise causes the body temperature to rise and it deactivates the botox toxin ... sorry "protein"

so are you saying you shouldn't excercise period while on botox, or just 24 hours after

because either way I practiced at 1 today, when yesterday I had it done at like 3:45..is it deactivated?

My Doctor always told me the no heavy exercise thing wasn't really about raising the bodies temperature and deativating the botox.

His feeling was that when one exercises heavily, and then sweats a lot - they tend to rub their face madly. Its the rubbing of the face that may inadvertantly spread the botox to the wrong place.

Not the exercise itself.

At least that is how I understood it

In order to maximize results and quicken recovery time after botox treatments, you should keep your head elevated for approximately 4-6 hours after treatment. Individuals receiving botox treatments should also avoid any heavy exercise, lifting, or physical activity for at least 4-6 hours. The effectiveness of botox treatments is enhanced by frequent stimulation of the treated muscle, and patients are urged to perform these small exercises.

Most of that is quite familar to me janicejan. I've never heard of keeping the head elevated with botox though.

You aren't getting botox and dermal fillers mixed up are you? I always sleep on 4 pillows after my fillers but never bother with botox alone.

Keeping the head elevated is probably a little bit old fashioned for post treatment plans for botox.

At least one leading doctor thinks you only need to avoid heavy exercise for 4 hours after injection. He claims he is the world's leading botox injector and claims to personally inject over 150,000 of units of botox per year! )The man must have syringes in both left and right hands). I guess he is in a strong position to judge complication rates.

I believe the main reason to avoid heavy exercise post treatment is to minimise sweating and the consequent rubbing of the face that occurs with this. Rubbing of the face certainly increases the chances of he botox migrating to the wrong muscles.

At Kiora we ask our patients to avoid heavy exercise until the next day and to exercise the muscles injected for 2 hours immediately after the injection. So if you inject the frown the patient has to frown as much as possible in the 2 hours immediately after treatment

When you say exercise the muscle doctornev does this mean repeat movment or should you just hold an expression

eg if you get the frown botoxed does this mean you just hold a frown or does it mean you frown then relax then frown for two hours?

I have had botox for about 8 years now. I have never had long lasting effects and have tried everything uping the dosage did increase its effect but not its longevity. I have even had a nurse who worked for the Pharmacutical compay that distributes botox try different injection and dillution techniques and still my results last only 4-6 weeks. I have learned this is more common then shared. I know of at least 8 people who are in the 4 to 6 week range. I am currentley researching GFX and Dysport.

There's really no hard science about the recommendation on exercise after botox. It is thought possible that rubbing the area of injection either directly or through vigorous muscle of the involved muscle could lead to migration of the botox to other areas where it is not intended. Exactly how long it takes for all the injected botox to either to be taken up by muscle cell receptor or removed by body is unknown. So the recommendations are based on clinical anecdotal experience. 4-24 hours does seem reasonable.

Everyone should take proper guidance with a professional doctor after having botox treatment and better know about do's and don't do's.
