I've had a couple of friends who've had this done for migraines and bad headaches.

Has anyone on this board had it done? Does it really work.

I've done a fair bit internet searching on it and supposedly the botox works by either relaxing the muscles causing the headache (most headaches result form muscles squeezing down too hard) or this is a new theory that botox might actually help directly with the pain.

I'ld like to heard if anyone on this board has had it work for them.

Never heard of this.

Have you got a source for this jomol?

I've heard it's good for tension type chronic headaches. Makes sense - holding a frown for any amount of time quickly gives you a headache. Don't know about migraines, though.

Botox is indeed proving to be very useful for a large variety of medical conditions.

A lot of cosmetic doctors have for years been making observations that peopletreated with Botox got greatly decreased headaches.

Interestingly this effect seemed to be out of keeping with the amount of "muscle" immobilised. Meaning maybe the pain relief effect is more than just relieving the muscle tension.

A lot of neurologists in america have begun treating bad headaches with botox.

Note this is not something done in the first instance. It is imperitive a General Practitioner (Family Doctor in the USA) or a neurologist investigates you thoroughly before using botox as a teatment. Botox is not very good at treating brain tumors or bleeds on the brain!

Current theories suggest the effect is either from

1. Relieving the muscle tension causing the headache
2. there is a vague suggestion botox might have analagesic effects separate to its paralytic effect and a lot of very clever boffins are looking hard at this now.

So if I am getting Botox for my appearance (crow's feet, forehead lines) anyway is there a chance it cures my headaches as well?

Hi Starfish,

I indeed found this to be the case.

I got botox for my frown and crow's feet and I noticed about 2 months later I was getting far less migraines.

Now I get my botox like clockwork ever 3 months. Not for my appearance but to stop those regular migraine attacks I was getting.

My health insurance doesn't cover it yet though. And I have been trying to convince them!
