I keep seeing Botox and Fillers mentioned together.

What are fillers? Why are they always mentioned along with botox?

Hi Nadine.

NO offence but we should really make this thread a sticky. It comes up a lot.

Quickly,

Botox immobilises the frowns and stops them forming when you scowl, frown and so on.

Fillers work to fill in the permanent lines which are there after your face is totally relaxed.

Dynamic wrinkles = use botox
Static wrinkles = use fillers such as restylane collagen etc

as someone said before there are quite a few posts on dynamic vs static already on the forum. There's a nice search function built in here

Just be careful of the filler you use!

Some last much much longer than others.

I started off using collagen.

Then graduated to restylane, the most famous of the collagen alternatives. Its slightly more expensive but it works out much much cheaper in the long run as it lasts a lot longer.

I'm now onto some of the even newer fillers that last about 50% longer than restylane. Talk to your doctor about how long the filler they are using lasts. Or even better look up some of them. I use Radiesse now. It stays in for over a year

The above statements are basically correct.

Just note to treat any deep wrinkle lines botox is always first, then fillers.

The botox immobilises the muscles and softens the wrinkle lines.

Any residual furrows can then be filled with restylane/collagen etc.

Also note fillers can be used to treat things other than wrinkles.

The aging process not only involves wrinkles but also the loss of "body" as your face gets older. Its a bit like the "sucking prune" look of your grandmother. Her previously full face gradually loses "
body" over time. My grandmother is still beautiful (of course) but you can see that in her youth her cheeks and jaw were fuller.

It is getting increasingly popular to fill in the nasolabial folds (the lines going from the nose and arcing over the mouth), the chin and the cheeks. The fillers basically give body to any area desired.

Fillers could also be used to fix wrinkles, however their primary purpose is to plump facial features.
