Hey I read somewhere that botox can be used to treat excessive sweating underneath the armpits and the palms? Is this true? I thought it was mainly used to treat wrinkles?

I heard that it basically stops the communication between certain nerve cells and muscles, so theoretically it should be able to be used in this way too.
My son had quite a bit of trouble. Even with sports deodarant he was still coming home with ugly sweaty patches under his armpits. Each treatment lasted at least 6 months. At least all summer which is the season that is the main trouble anyway

My doctor mentioned casually once that she treats one of her patients for sweaty feet with botox! So I guess if it works on the feet it should work on the underarms. I'm due for more botox (next appointment in 4 weeks!), I can ask for you if you like.

Hi Sally. Botox is very useful for treating hyperhydrosis, or excessive sweating. Botox serves to inhibit the release of acetylcholine. In muscles this stops the nerve impulse from being transmitted to the muscle. In sweat glands acetylcholine causes the release of sweat. Botox injected very superficially around the sweat glands of either the armpit or palms is very good at stopping this sweating without affecting the muscles.
