Does laser hair removal really work? I've got really thick hair that my beauty therapist says is "strong"... Don't want to pay all that money and have it not work. Can anyone recommend a place they've been to in Melbourne that's cheap?

I've tried it round my bikini area and it was great. After 3 treatments the hairs were really fine and neally invisible. After 5 they were completely gone and I never have to wax there again! There's plenty of places in Melbourne that offer Laser Hair Removal. Just do a yellowpages search and ask about prices.

Hi gocat. Good luck with the hair removal. I've had it too and you'll never go back to waxing. Just a word of caution. Ask how old their machine is. I had it a while ago and it actually left some very sensitive areas for a long time. I've heard the older machines use far too much power than was necessary.

Hi Locki,
How can you tell if the machine is an old one? I rang up one clinic and they sort of side stepped the question and said "we use a good machine from one of the good companies"... Oh, I asked another question about burning the face, do you know anything about that? Is the "too much power" what burns the skin? thanks

Hi babybear,

It is hard to tell if a machine is brand new or old. Do not rely on looking at the machine and thinking "wow that looks new."!

Probably the best way is to ring up the clinic and ask what made and model laser/IPL the clinic uses. Then I would do a google search on that make and model. All of the best medical laser companies have very extensive websites that are fully up to date and show all of their models along with accompanying evidence for their efficacy. You will soon find out if the laser is some antiquated out of date machine or is some less than reputable machine from the depths of Asia.

Now for a free plug for myself :)

Kiora only uses Alma's flagship model Laser named the Alma. it is a very advanced machine that uses the latest patented AFT technology for increased efficacy and decreased pain. All laser and IPL work is either done by myself or Dr Grace Lin. We firmly believe all laser work should be done either by a doctor or under the direct supervision of the doctor. Whilst adverse outcomes are rare with a laser you are dealing with high energy and there is a real risk of a poor outcome if the machine is used in the wrong fashion. You can check out some in-dept technical details of our machine on

or on our own website at:

I actually got my laser hair removal at my usual spa. They were a lot cheaper and I was fairly happy with the results. I can email you their address if anyone is interested
