How safe is IPL hair removal? I've heard that there are some law suits going on in America where the woman's face was burned and she's now got patches of white (she's black). I mean, I've got some friends who had it done and they love it, but I'm still a bit scared! Oh and also one of the friends said it hurt "a lot"...

Hi babybear.

The laser hair removal was a lot less painful than waxing! Each "zap" felt like getting flicked wiht a rubber band. Not that pleasant after 10-20 zaps or so but much better than the hairs getting ripped outa your legs by the roots

I second that about the pain!

I 3rd it! Like a rubber band flicking. Or an electric shock. Reminds you of primary school days actually!

There's actually a similar discussion to this going on in the For Men forum. We're not too keen on either waxing or laser. But then we don't have to give birth to *****ren

Permanent Laser Hair reduction relies on a sophisticated high energy laser or IPL (Intense Pulse Light) emitting a wavelength that is preferentially absorbed by the hair follicles, not your skin. Laser Hair Removal Lasers or IPLs emit a specific wavelength of light in the spectrum of 600-1100nm which is the wavelength of light absorbed by the melalin of your hair follicle. The dark hair follicle will absorb this light, be selectively heated and over repeated treatments will be destroyed. Over a course of 6-8 treatments the hair follicles will die back reducing the hairs in the relevant area.

Laser Hair Removal is not for everyone. Certain skin types are far more difficult to treat and in keeping with Kiora’s philosophy each client is individually counseled about the likely outcomes of laser hair removal. Dark skinned peoples with dark hairs are less suitable for laser hair reduction and require lengthier courses of treatment. The melanin that makes their skin darkly pigmented competes for the laser light and makes selective absorption by the hair follicle more difficult. Likewise people with blonde or red hair are often poor responders to IPL hair removal. The hair has insufficient melanin to absorb the light. It sounds simple but the nuances can be tricky and we always recommend an assessment of your skin type by one of our staff Cosmetic Physicians or highly trained Skin Therapists.
